Day after Holi…
“Arey mother and daughter quiet?”
Bai looked at Khanak ashamed… Khanak hinted that Dadi does
not know…
Bai looked relieved…
But not for too long, as Sonali came storming into the room,
sobbing.. Khanak and Bai’s face paled instantly
Dadi enquired in shock…
Bai, started to scold her in rough Gujarati, words that were
reserved for Sonali’s childhood…
Khanak continued to fold laundry, expressionless… something
told her this was going to become a big issue… she wondered if she had to pull
in Aada for some advice…
Sonali in between sobbing”I am going back to college Mami”
she wailed…
Bai kept shushing her
Dadi:WHAT happened beta? Kahin chot lagi kya?
Sonali looked at Khanak accusingly and in a drama queen
voice said “Haan Dadi bahut badi chot”
Dadi looked at Khanak
D:Where puttar, I thought HL was done mending that balcony
rail? (she asked in Punjabi)
Khanak responded in Hindi “Jee Dadi, balcony theek hai”
It irritated Sonali that Dadi would speak to her in Punjabi,
it indicated a special kind of intimacy that she DID not share… it bothered her
that Punjabi would not be a language she would ever get comfy with… like Khanak
Dee
Bai:Shut up right now, Sonu…
Sonali started to pull her clothes out of the folded pile…
Sonali:I am leaving
Bai: Shhh… stop it!
Dadi:HUA KYA?
Khanak:Who Dadi… it might be me… (squirming)
Dadi:What did you do puttar?
Bai rushed to shut the door… and as soon as she did, put her
own daughter out of misery by quickly blurting “Sonali was in Shaan’s almari
(closet) and her var told Sonu, she shud be downstairs”
Dadi looked mighty confused…
Sonali:HE DID NOT SAY ANY SUCH THING!
Khanak:Sonu… stop! (finger on her lips)
Sonu:Its you dee… you want me out of here… I make you
insecure..
Dadi:Sonali… stop it beta…
It suddenly struck Dadi… she understood…
Sonali: She never invites me here… never shares…
Dadi:ISKE bare mein to aisa mat keh puttar… she is putting
you through college..
Sonali:I know Mummy says “its charity”! (disdainful)
Bai sat there cringing… as the Mistry dirty linen was being
washed in public…
Khanak’s quiet dignified quality came from both her parents…
they hadn’t flinched once… even during Khanak’s widowhood… but this twit of a
girl was dragging the family through dirt…
Dadi: Beta I need you to stop and listen to me… wipe your
tears first…
Dadi sat by Sonali…
Sonali loved the attention… for a brief moment she felt like
she was Khanak and everything was hers…
“Dadiiii” she started to sob and hug the old woman…
Khanak made eye signals with Bai to leave the room.. Bai
looked horrified…
Khanak:I told her, she shouldn’t be in his closet when he is
changing.. (firm but almost inaudible)
Dadi smiled at her with pride…
Khanak blushed gently
The girl was still moping on Dadi’s shoulder…
“He is extremely nice to me. Khanak Dee hates that” she said
particularly in Gujarati… so Bai would understand it…
Dadi did too…
Dadi:He is her husband beta…
Dadi was treading carefully.. she realized the girl was
infatuated with her grandson…
She also realized her grandson must have rejected Sonali’s
advances…
Sonali: Dee acts like he is her property or something, she doesn’t
let him talk or be with any one else even for s econd… (lying)
Dadi soothed her with “Shhhhh”
There was a knock on the door…
Bai almost had a heart attack………..
Khanak:I am sorry Dadi…
Dadi: Quit apologizing… that’s why they call it a family…
Sonali:I am never coming back… I texted Jeeju and told him
that…
Khanak was startled yet again…
Another knock Aada “Should we have lunch now?” he enquired
outside…
Bai: Khanak’s Aada (as if Dadi suddenly did not know who it
is)
Dadi smiled at Bai’s discomfiture…
Sonali:I am leaving Dadi…
Dadi:Not a problem beta… I will arrange for a car…
Sonali: Beech mein mujhe Linking Rd mein shopping karna hai
(hissy)
Khanak: She can take a local Dadi…
Sonali:I have an injured toe from yesterday, at the terrace…
Jeeju ne mujh par color lagaya to main gir gayi (smug)
Dadi gently sat her separately…”You should go shop and have
fun… Ujju ko bhi bhejoon?”
The girl’s face lit up… she gave Khanak a arrogant smug
smile…
Bai:She has all she needs.. her Lab fee is due next month..
we are going to go see Kaka.. Khanak is already overloaded… Dadi’s hip surgery..
(Bai ranted… pained and worried, she looked like she would cry if Dadi wasn’t around)
Bai was feeling a strange fear… that some how Sonali would
convince Dadi and Dadi would buy her melodramatic story, and Khanak would be
thrown out of the Gujral house……..
Khanak took the laundry to Bai’s suitcases….
Dadi: Beta go get my purse, or bring Rs.25,000 from the safe
in my room (confident, cheerful,
reminding Khanak that she was a Gujral)
Grrrrrrr... Sonali shud send out of mumbai fr next 10 yrs !!!!!

she is insecure becoz her khanak didi is happy
glad dadi stood up for khanak n no on convinced her to stay like she wanted
now khanak should leave this sonu ki bacchi on her own
I want shaan to tell her clearly the clear off she is out of the league
nw bua will be on her case I want aada or dadi to stand up for khanak!

OMG!!! This Sonali is such a big drama queen..Dadi is a rockstar!!! I guess she also understood she only cares for money!!! But still Sonali doesn't deserve the money of Gujrals.

This is what Khanak is getting by providing her extended family their needs hence she gets the taunts and the arrogant behaviour from her own cousin!!
