She was helping Kaki dry clothes in the common terrace, Kaki
was deliberately redoing every garment she was drying, Khanak noticed it, yet
continued to do her job, Mehul and Mitali were thrilled to see her, Kaka, Fa
and Aada had gone for Kaka’s Doc appointment. Since the Trust favored private
hospitals and Docs, they weren’t at the mercy of Govt hospitals. Kaka was not
doing “great” he was OK… Kaki wanted “Mumbai treatment” Khanak had no clue how they
could accomplish that…
Part of Kaki’s extremely self absorbed selfish nature, she
only worried about her own family…. Unlike Bai and Bai’s progeny………. Mehul was
staying out of trouble, he was starting B Com in July… she was sure she will be
able to find him a job when he was done… unfortunately none of her cousins
shared her love for the academics… Mitali was
caring and compassionate though… a Mistry trait…
Kaki enquired about her “Var” asked her in detail about how she
“liked” being in a family where they “ate meat and drank like fishes”. Asked
her mockingly if she had learnt to “cook maas”, wanted to know “what smelled
the worst””If her husband drank daily” She asked how many help she had, if she
ever went to the temple now…. Kaki’s frustration with her own life, her
inability to provide for things to her own kids, things that Khanak magically
received because she married a “Punjabi” were hard to reconcile….
She referred to Khanak as a “Jeth’s daughter that had
married out of her caste”
Some of Kaki’s neighbors wanted to see Shaan’s picture,
Mitali showed them on her facebook…. She didn’t have Shaan as a friend, but his
profile was not hidden….. there were
many pictures of them… Khanak fully clothed…. Taken in Seychelles……….
A woman gasped when she saw Shaan…
Turned around to look at Khanak, and told her friend in
Marathi “Imagine marrying someone like THAT despite being a widow”
Khanak heard… it didn’t bother her… NOW she was married…
even when she was a widow it didn’t affect her………
Kaki showed them things Khanak and Shaan had bought for
their house……….
Sonali gushed about how big Khanak di’s house is “IN MUMBAI”
They talked about why there is no mangal sootra in Punjabis
why Khanak didn’t wear one… Khanak had forgotten to… she was careful in
displaying symbolism when she visited family… “I cant take chances, its my
second time” she would tell Ritu.
Ritu would feel awful for her friend…
Her husband had removed it last nite…. Despite her protest…
it lay in a crystal bowl by the bed… Khanak swiftly walked away from the “women’s
mandli” to hide her blush….
Pradeep was assigned to her… Dad and Bhayya were returning
tonite… their drivers had the weekend off, Shaan was driving his Toureg more
often, his driver was on payroll for no reason…
She texted him when she reached “I am home now”
“Kaka’s u mean?”he asked correcting her…
“That’s what I meant” she responded, taking her own time,
unwilling to admit her guilt….
“Aap kahan hai?” she asked…
Hindi always got her a smiley… it did now as usual…
“Ulwe” he said..
She didn’t say anything for that… he had left when she and
her family had started for Pune, at 7.
He had walked down with her to her car… rode the elevator…
Emptied his car, empty water bottles, camera equipment…
multiple sun glasses… phone chargers… and half a dozen newspapers ……. Pradeep
took them all obliging… he left a couple of her scuncies and a lip gloss in the
door nook…
“Yahan hai mera fave yellow” she muttered…
“Do you need it?” he asked checking her out… she wore a pale
orange designer cotton suit with no dupatta…
“Mmm.. mm” she answered…
“Gloss?”he asked politely…
“Its beige” she said…
They lingered by the passenger door on his SUV…….
“No overnite bag I am assuming?”
“You are” she said smiling softly…
“Assuming” she followed…
He bent down like he would have kissed her… he hated public
displays of affection… she knew that……….
The elevator doors slid open… Fa spoke loudly……. Sonali
sprinted to where they lingered………… “JEEJU, Yeh hai aapki nayi car”
She called to her Dad, caressing the gleaming metal as she
did…
Shaan responded to texts… Khanak stepped away… not bothered
by Sonali leaning with her arms stretched……..
S:Jeeju, ek photo le loon
He chuckled amused “Sure!... Zaroor”
Fa took a picture of his brat with his phone…
Shaan followed Khanak… “Samar says hi!”
“Hi”
“Shaadi ho gayi?” she asks somberly… unable to remember
anything…
“Soon” he says
Aada is content to watch the private converstion between his
two most fave people…
Sonali was posing randomly……
Khanak pulled the fabric around her neck closer… he noticed…
a couple of spots on under her collar bone were red and sore…
“Don’t look at me like that” he said…
“I will” she said softly, covering his love bites… furiously…
Fa: Kitni gaadiyan yaha park hoti hain?
Shaan looked confused… letting go of the eye combat with
wife reluctantly….. “500? Uncle?” he responded…
Aada: Shaam ko laut aayegi Khanak
Sonali:Aur main bhi, Daddy aur Mamaji kal aayenge (happy)
Shaan looked at his wife with a firm“TEXT me when you leave
Pune”
“Come get me” her eyes responded mischievously… his phone rang as he walked
away… got into his car and revved the engine… just as Pradeep got off the
elevator, Shaan swerved his car toward Pradeep and said something to him,
looked at her as he wore his sunglasses… backing out of the garage noisily…

and why the hell sonali is returning with khanak usko dusra kaam nahi hain kya?

ReplyDeleteKhanak has ungrateful family members...they must be considerate she has her OWN life but instead pile on their expectations...Khanak needs to learn when to say NO, helping Kaka is good but then the Mumbai treatment is far-fetched now, her family probably thinks they can assail on her money now as she is married to a wealthy family
She is ABS brilliant though...takes nothing on her stride, doesn't care for people to condemn every single thing about her, I think that makes her look elegant she balances it clearly what effects her and what not
THE COUPLE! Sigh! They are becoming intensely madly adorable...Did he spend the Saturday at home? If yes, a complete shocker! Anyways...call me silly, the mundane things like his car has her scuncies and lip gloss, intervening of their belongings in each others territories is completely adorable...these little details or touches make this story much more romantic for me :)
Ermm I'm wondering if Shantanu might help the family through the trust...I remember Dadi granting the family during the wedding proposal time
with the mention of Samar,can we have them attend the wedding... I hope so!

Well i don't have words how you describe the middle class family, that's the reality, if one did care about them, they would retort back to the same person with fierce and jealousy..
That's how the life is, people are very forgetful!

if only Khanak could openly tell her selfish relatives how happy she is with her "Var".......who is madly and crazily in love with her!! as always loved the Shanak part......every little detail of the send off was awesome.......very eager to know what happens next!!
