Cement mixers roared and whirred within ear shot, there were
a dozen trailers parked all over the site, the airconditioning on full blast,
he was looking at multiple screens, wearing a hard hat, there were two men
peering over the screen, wherever he pointed, Nachiket and Basil stood in a
corner chatting…
“No, this…. Is a 4feet column… I am actually talking about
the truss on the back…”
Guy 1: Gujral, I told you the Project supe didn’t want us to
move this thing all the way back…
Guy 2: Mere notes mein bhi yahi hai (consults his ipad)
Gujral was irritated (for other reasons ofcourse) “I told
you I will have a word with him you guys! Lets just FOCUS? PLEASE?” he snapped…
“We cant go back and redo it all, just so you know”
People walked in and out of the trailer, trucks dropped off
long iron beams and girders…. Work was on full swing… Rahat was expected for a
walkthrough in a week or two…
Nachiket:Gujral, what was the name of the junior partner
again?
Gujral: We have a dozen firms on this project which one

N:Oh! The ones on the villa style town homes… arey tujhe

Basil laughed… Nachiket chuckled…

G:Really? (pissed)

Guy 1:So 4 feet columns? (still not convinced)

The two guys walk away… Shaan checks his phone…
Nachiket:How is that gorgeous girl?
Shaan:Which one?
Nachiket:That Gujju chick you married…
Shaan shrugged carelessly “Wait until I see you Mrs Gujral”
he hissed in his mind…
Basil’s phone rings…
Nachiket: I recall how she used to look at you during Casa
diSogni… you terrified her…
Shaan looked up at Nachiket, suddenly wanting to relive
every moment of courtship and pursuit…
Nachiket:You acted as if you would devour her if she would
give you a nod…
Shaan smiled a small half smile…
Nachiket:She is afraid of you isn’t she?
Shaan:NO! She is strong! (clenching his jaw)
Nachiket:I meant in bed… man!
Shaan looked at Nachiket, not revealing anything from his
private life…
“Rahat texted me about that Maharashtra Road Transport
Authority Commissioner that approved that Jogeshwari Vikhroli link project , he
might know a guy that can get us the Ulwe –Wahal, Ulwe Padeghal road project…”
“Its funny you would call it a “Project” Gujral” Nachiket
laughed
“I know its not even on paper” Shaan admitted…
Both men looked pensive… “When we hand this over…
connectivity is a bitch…”
Shaan said
“It took me an hour and 20 minutes to get here on the Vashi
brudge, getting to the goddamn site took me 40 minutes”
“We can only hope” said Shaan looking faraway..

her form… like she was a biological specimen)
Khanak looked away:Hmmm

Khanak was FURIOUS “What the hell” “I have NO idea who you
are, WHY do you care”
Aada: How much longer should we wait?
RE Agent:Mr Vaishnav has gone to get the local municipality
officer
Khanak squirmed… it was hot and crowded… the conversation
was distasteful..
Dheeraj:Bhabhiji your new var… I hear he has many cars?
K:Not many…
Dheeraj: Bai said he looks like a movie star!
Kthinks”Your Bai should mind her own biz”
Aada: Beta can you go check where your Bappaji went?
Dheeraj doesn’t move
REAgent:Malabar Hill? There the homes are worth 100s of
crores.. are you renting?
K:I DON’T know (“Please leave me alone” plea)
She wondered if the Vaishnavs would have built here in Mansa
if Sooraj were alive… if they would have moved here… how big would the house
have been?
“Would they live together?”
“Punjabis are big on joint families” Sooraj’s Mom never
insisted they live together, though she may have held a grudge”
“You need to behave yourself we live in a joint family” she
would hiss fighting his roving hands on the rec room couch…
“I am very careful, I haven’t undressed you”…. “yet” he
would chuckle… easily victorious…
“I can hear Dadi’s footsteps Shantanu” she would plead hoarsely..pulling
her clothes down, over his roving hand…
“I can hear your pounding heart Khanak” he would counter…
feeling it in the process
