This tale actually started as a prank two years ago I think. Cant even remember exactly. 

Fan fictions usually begin either as a tribute to the lead couple's phenomenal chemistry

OR

When the show itself loses its charm


Mine was because of both

Khanak is an amalgam of ALL the 20 something girls I have met in life, INCLUDING ME! :-)
Middle class girls Girls that share a deep love and concern for their family. Girls that go above and beyond to make things happen.
The fact that Khanak was widowed ofcourse came from the original story.
I didnt want to write about Saas Bahu clashes.Madz will never think of her as a equal. Boo will never be her best friend.
BUT....
Khanak is SO self assured and confident that she lives in that house oblivious to all that latent indifference 

Shaan is flawed too!! IMO
He was a virgin when he married her I agree, but that was Saaz's idea :-) She suggested to make it that way.
That would bring out the flaw in her that she OVER estimated his sexual promiscuity ;-)
Khanak had a low opinion of him, because she assumed he must have bedded a 1000 women.
He foolishly ran away to the United States when a worker died in his watch.
He takes on more than he can handle at work
He is selfish, though it appears sexy in the tale, he wants to be her "everything"
She hates people that eat meat, he continues to... unconcerned...
There is an unmistakeable arrogance in the way he interacts with her.
He continues to address her parents at Uncle and Aunty and wont eat much at her place.
He in his mind, separates her, unknowingly from her messy middle class tangles and just feverishly obsesses over her.
He is corrupt, he works hand in hand with Rahat to "achieve" business goals, be it bribing local officials or feting them...

Sonali is based on a character I met in a friend's family years ago, that started out likeable, but slowly developed into someone greedy and ambitious.... aspiring for things beyond her means simply utilizing her "non existent charms". "If Khanak Di can do it why cant I"

Growing up lower middle class, access to good education is possible because of Khanak. If she had been noble and gratituous and thankful, then it would have become another Ek Hazaaron mein Meri Behna Hai. This is a TALE, it has to have characters that don't behave NOBLY.

IF Sonali was a cloyingly sweet character piling on Shaan all the time  "tying Rakhi" and chanting "Bhagwan ne mujhe ek bhai de diya"
If she is fully respectful and moved to tears by the Gujrals.... then my story would become a Kekta soap


Some may have noble intentions, but putting those into action may require foolishness or tactlessness THAT in my opinion makes a good story

Khanak wants to help everyone, but how she does it borders on the ridiculous at times.
There is a lot of guilt in her, she actually envies herself at some point.. envies that Shantanu catapulted her from a drab lower middle class existence filled with financial woes to the top 5% of Indian society
This can only happen in a story
For that reason I admit and agree to your point that Shaan is too "perfect"
NO GUY like Shaan in INDIA will marry a nobody
I see this thing happen all the time here in the US

(They may separate after a child or two and there are messy divorces and one person steps out of the closet declaring he or she is gay,utterly bizarre is defined by how the rich and famous live in this country...........but yes it does happen here all the time. FB guy married his college sweetheart... IF he were in India, it would NEVER happen.)

But no, not in India!

Bottom line, its just a story, NOT intended for any awards or felicitations. 
Even if ALL of it borders on the bizarre like the vampire stories or the Hollywood garbage of Bruce Willis saving the earth (I am sorry but Kekta seems Oscar worthy to me compared to all the "alien" drivel Hollywood churns out........)

I apologize to all those to whom its not realistic enough or plausible enough
